Temporary staffing pioneer Yushiko Shinohara started Tempstaff from her apartment in 1973 at the age of 38. Having first encountered temporary staffing while working in Australia, Shinohara returned to Japan to launch her company, teaching English in the evenings to pay her rent. Temp Holdings has since grown to more than 400 domestic and 43 international offices. Shinohara ranked seventh on the Financial Times’ 2010 Women at the Top list and 46th on Forbes Japan’s Richest 2015 list. In her 80s, Shinohara remains actively involved in the running of the business.
